Morning Pages Entry – February 25, 2014

Well, today I have to get to some editing and perhaps a bit of rewriting. But, before that, I have to say, it was a bit strange last night, when I came in from squash, as everyone in the house was so super nice, friendly, and happy. Which is a good thing, but just a bit out of the ordinary. I was playing squash with David from about 4-6, so I missed supper, but I have to assume, that everyone had a conversation over dinner about something, but I’m not so sure what. Even Jessica came to give me a hug before bed. Not a bad thing at all, but a bit out of character. We’ll see where this goes today. As for the squash with David yesterday, that was pretty cool. I beat him 3-0. I’ve never beaten him that badly before. He’s always a slow starter, so I can often manage to get a game or two off him early, and several times I’ve taken the first two from him, but usually run out of steam to finish and end up losing. Yesterday, it was looking a bit like that. I had won the first two games. They were both close, but I did manage to win them both. Then, the third game I ended up down 9-2 early, and basically gave up around 8-2, thinking I would save my strength for the next game or 5th game if need by. But as it turned out, I ended up scoring point after point. When it got to around 9-6, I started thinking maybe I should start trying. When it got to 9-7 and 9-8, I was definitely trying. I ended up winning 12-10, which was pretty cool for me. Not so much for David, but he’s such an easy going guy, he never seems to get upset over anything. But I think it bugged him a bit, not that that was my intention, but anyone would be a bit annoyed after that. I’ve done stuff like that before, but not for a long time. Sometimes, just relaxing a bit, and not trying so hard can be a good thing. Sometimes you just think too much, and as my old friend Bruce used to say, “Don’t think too much. Thinking hurts the team.”. It’s another one of those life lessons you can use from sport. Sometimes in life, I think I think too much. Like about this writing stuff. A little more Nike (just do it) would definitely apply in most cases for me. Stop thinking so much, and just write, or just edit, or just get organized, or just do whatever you have to do to come up with a great cover. Geoff Shaw from my Kindling course keeps sending out these letters and videos of inspiration about how successful all sorts of people are being with this stuff. It’s what I need to do more of. Start writing, enjoy the writing. Do some plotting and come up with some really interesting scenes for your characters to play in. Then when it comes to the writing you know where your going, and things can be fun. Fun and challenging. I think, the other thing I need to do, is not to make it so simple for myself. Sometimes, I think I’m too hesitant to make it tough on my characters. All good novels make it tough on their characters. That’s what the readers want. Give them conflict, give them impossible tasks to accomplish. That’s what great reading and great writing are all about. I need to go back through a bunch of my original story, and do some rewriting, but first of all, what I think I need to do, is to actually go back and make sure it has a good outline. Give every scene a goal, a conflict, and a setback. That’s what you started doing with the story, but then you got away from it a bit. I need to do more of that. I think, that going back and editing up your existing work would be a really good exercise. Plus, it could help to come up with a good ending for it as well. I sort of know, that I want them to end up in Fort Knox, but I want Chaz to be pretty beat up, and I’m not sure what I want to happen with the girl and Alex, but there needs to be some good conflict and hurdles to overcome. This is the big ending after all.
