Morning Pages Entry – May 21, 2014

More stories about success with the publishing model. I’ve gone back and started reading TattooedWriters post in the WritersCafe fourm, and it’s interesting, but not telling me a whole lot I didn’t already know. Likely, because I’ve read this forum post before. His data charts are missing, but I suppose there’s a good reason for that. Perhaps to protect his books from those that would care to hurt him by giving him bad reviews. I feel a little bit out of it this morning. I’m not quite back into my regular routine yet this morning. And, I’ve missed my 2 minute workouts the last few mornings. I’m going to have to work on getting those back when I start spending time at the boat. Don’t want to totally get out of shape this year. So, looks like, I’m going to be getting a paddle board for my birthday this year. That’s sort of cool. Will have to order it myself from Costco. I should make a point to use that this summer on the beach. Probably more in the evenings. Don’t want to just leave Jessica alone in the boat while I go out Paddle boarding too much. But, maybe I will. It should be a challenging activity to get myself in shape for the summer. I really like TattooedWriters original forum post. Especially since, most of his stories are shorter stories. He jumped around to different genres, and I wonder, if I stuck to the same genre, would I build up a faster readership then he has. I would have to think, that spreading out to so many different genres would have taken him a bit longer to get going. The main thing is though, that he wrote and published just about every week. That’s impressive. He did say, that he jumped around in genres too much when he started, suggesting that if he had made one of his genre authors popular before moving on to the next one it would have been better for him. I wouldn’t mind, branching out into pure sci-fi and fantasy and horror after the post-apocalyptic one I’ve been writing now. I need to find the groove, where I’m writing every day, and getting the writing done by noon. Then using the rest of the day for other interesting things. Like covers or marketing (or maybe no marketing). I like the idea of just writing and publishing, but then again, I think that most of the writers I’ve come across do. While marketing can be mildly entertaining, if I can get away without doing it, that would be pretty cool as well. Devoting my efforts to writing more, and as a result becoming a better writer would be more beneficial I think. Although, I suppose, that getting good at any skill, whether it be writing, or marketing would be beneficial. It’s just a matter of picking the one that’s the most interesting for you. I think that writing would be more up your alley, then the marketing. And your not constantly paying for advertising. Apart from the mailing list thing, if you could stay away from the marketing altogether that would be pretty cool. So, get back to writing, and get into the flow of doing it all the time. Slog your way through this editing process. I wonder if TattooedWriter says anything about how he handles the editing. If he has someone else that does it or what? Smaller would have other advantages I would think as well. You could keep it in your head easier. But, it’s still an impressive pace to go at. Although, I thin the 5K per day written and editied would do the trick. Need to get to that point. You still need time for outlining though. That’s one piece that I haven’t really perfected or even tried out all that much yet. Apart form the snowflake approach to writing that I began with. Reread the scene/sequel from Jim Butcher, and then use yWriter to put an outline out there. He does seem to more or less follow that approach with the software. That could be a bit painful at first (like everything) , but eventually worth it. I think? I hope! Of course, it’s worked for enough others, there’s no reason why it wouldn’t work for one more. I need to get to the point, where the writing feels more like a creative outlet, then a chore. That’s a goal worth shooting for. Where the writing feels necessary, like food or oxygen.
