Morning Pages Entry – May 30, 2014

Well, yesterday was pretty busy. Spent a bunch of time in the kitchen making the chocolate chilli, and the ranch dressing sauce for dipping, and the almond flour chicken finger things. And yesterday, was even our official start of the whole 30, today is. But, it did give me a few recipes to get the ball rolling with, that’s for sure. And, they all went pretty well. Everybody seemed to like stuff. The chilli turned out pretty well, and the sauce turned out well enough for everyone to really enjoy. Karen didn’t eat any of the sauce, but the girls certainly did, and all three of them liked it. The chicken fingers were definitely too spicy, and I laid the crust on too heavy, but we can improve on that for the next time. Not a bad start I’d say. You should make the chicken fingers every other day or so. I should try making another dressing as well. I think, theirs a vinagerette in the “It Starts With Food” book. Anyways, the only thing that didn’t really go good yesterday (also got some more shopping in), was that I didn’t get much done on the character sketches that I’m already behind on finishing. I got Christa’s done, but but I still have to do Alex’s, the zombies, and the world description stuff. And, that’s before I get back to doing more editing and outlining on the story. I only have a week, and a day, before I have to ship what I have off to my editor. I can’t be spending all my time in the kitchen. I think, that Sam needs to learn to make her own lunch. There’s not reason for me to have to prepare everything that I’ve been making. As long as the fridge is stocked with stuff that’s whole30 compliant, then it doesn’t make a lot of sense, for me to have to load everything up into a lunch bag. She knows better what she should be taking. I would like to get to the boat sometime this weekend, and check on the window and stuff. I haven’t been back, since I fixed it, and I’m sure, it looks a little funny sitting there now, with those bags of dirt on the window. I really hope, that the sealant too, and that I put enough of it on to get a good seal. It’s sort of important. It should have worked. That will be great, if it takes. This will be an interesting week coming up I think, with the whole 30 in full swing. The trick will be, getting Karen to stick to the plan. She wanted to know last night, if she did it only 95 percent going forward, would she still get benefit of it. I said no. That she had to do it 100% or start from day 1 again when she cheated. There is no reason to let anything influence what goes in your mouth. That’s totally your decision. Even Sam said she was going someone’s house one of her friends for Saturday evening, and wasn’t sure if she could stick to the plan. I’ll have to talk to her about that. She just needs to get enough food in her, before she goes, so that she’s not hungry and therefore will be less tempted to cheat. And she needs to have some kind of spiel she can give to everyone, about not eating certain things. Like she could just say, that her whole family, is doing the whole30 thing for the next bunch of days, and that she doesn’t want to cheat on it. Blame it on her parents, or her dad, or whatever. But, they need to have that ammunition going forward to deal with social events with food. It’s all part of the thing. The thing of your relationship with food, and how it’s intertwined with social and family events. That’s an important lesson to be learned. Even Karen, I don’t think, is quite getting this. She asked yesterday, what she could eat that was sweet. Well. Fruits are really it, and I think, she had a hard time with that. But, that’s one of the things, we all signed up for here. There is no refined or added sugar allowed anywhere in this routine. That’s sort of the whole point of this. You need, to make sure, that they just eat filling meals, as they get started. You need to look through the breakfast recipes, and see if there’s stuff you can make ahead of time that they can eat. Stuff that they can eat.
