Morning Pages Entry – June 23, 2014

It’s a whole new world out there for me if feels like today. I knew, that putting a book out there, finally in a published form would mean something different for me, and would give me something new to focus on, but it was still a struggle to get there. Now that it’s out there, I want so much, to have another one out there. I want there to be more books to watch, and monitor, and see how they do. It’s definitely going to be a motivating factor. I need today, to make a cover for the next book, make a few simple edits, and get it out there. I’m thinking, that forgoing any major edits, and just putting the first book out there was a good idea. I sill haven’t gotten any reviews on the book yet, which I sort of have mixed feelings about, but we’ll deal with that when it happens. As long, as the reviews aren’t that bad, then I’ll be happy. I made another sale already today, and I think it was from the UK as well. It seems that so far, I’ve sold 3 books in the UK, and only 1 in the US. That’s a little weird, given, that the US is by far the bigger market, but that’s ok. I’m also ranked around 22K in the UK and over 200K in the US. I’m not really sure how the UK rankings work, but I suppose they probably have about the same number of books over there, so that’s really a pretty good rank. Probably much too early to tell if it means anything yet, but that’s ok. The big take away from all of this, is that I’ve really got a book out there, and I’ve really made some sales, and I really, really want to put more books out there to be read. That’s really what I want. How quickly, can you get another book written and out there? That’s the real question. How quickly, can you get another novel to Emily for editing is the question. And, should you use the ending from the first one as the begging of the third book. You need to get writing again, and quickly. If this is going to take off, you do need to keep fueling it. Apart from getting the next book out there, you do need to schedule things a bit better. Take if it’s going to take Emily a month to get to your next book, then you need to talk with her sooner then later, and schedule a slot. If your looking at another month to get your book to her, then you should likely schedule a slot today. Yes definitely, look at the calendar, come up with some dates, and email Emily. That’s your priority for today, and think about new ways to start engaging your customer with your website and mailing list as well. That’s an exciting new part about this whole thing as well. You probably need to get a contact form on your site as well, so people can get in touch with you if they want to. Time to start engaging your readers … all 4 of them 😉 Well, here’s to more writing and remember why were doing all of this … for the love of the work … for the love of writing … the money is exciting and all, but it’s just the icing on the cake … do it because you love doing it. Go, write some stories, and make it fun. Fun for both you, and your reader. That’s the path to success for all of this. Keep publishing, keep writing. Streamlining the whole process is important here as well. Things are a bit haphazard at the moment, and no doubt, that’s partially because so much of this is new to me, but now that you’ve jumped through all the hoops to getting your first novel published, the rest can only get easier. You’ll be able, to focus more on getting the writing right, and less on the admin and logistical side of things. That’s what were going for here. Get good at the writing side of things, and everything else will fall into place. And, you’ll be happier, and your readers will be happier. That’s the key. Keeping everyone that comes in contact with your books happy … or at least the majority of them. You know not everyone will be, and you can let the nay sayers get you down. Just like, you never let any of the critics (both internal and external) keep you from publishing your first book, there’s no need to let anyone else stop you now. Write write write!

Morning Pages Entry – May 19, 2014

Well, this is fun. For the first time since starting to write morning journals, I get to write one form the cockpit of my boat. It’s the first night we spent on the water, and Jennifer and I stayed over night last night. It was a really cool night. We had just one slot open in the companion way open, and the heater was going full blast. I slept with socks, long pants and a t-shirt, and I was still pretty cool. Oh yea, and the heater was going full blast. We went and socialized a bit with Marty, Ingrid, Jacqueline and her new boyfriend Jordan last night before heading over to the fire on the beach with Tom and Ryan, and the two Katies crew. Jennifer stayed up for a bit of it, but eventually was smart enough to go to bed before midnight. She’s still sleeping this morning, but it’s looking like it’s going to be a pretty nice day today. It’s supposed to be. It’s cool, still sitting here in my hoodie this morning, but it should get warmer later. There’s hardly a cloud in the sky, and the sun is shining. Today would likely be a good day to put some sails up on the boat. Probably a little too cool to head out on the water, but, just as I say that, I see a nonSuch heading out up the river. There’s really no breeze yet today, but if it get’s warm enough, who knows, maybe we’ll venture out a bit once the sun is up and working at full blast. This is such a great place to sit and write, I think I wuld do some serious damage with the zombie novel, writing from this cockpit. It has to be better, then sittin at the table down below. I’m sure, that’s sort of what messed my back up last summer. I really want to avoid messing that up again this hear. I remember, not even being able to site, to write. All I could do was lie there, and surf around on the WritersCafe fourm at the kindle boards. I suppose, I leared a lot of stuff, but i didn’t get a lot of writing done during that bad back period. Certainly, something to avoid. The basin, is not too full this morning, there are maybe 30 boats in so far for this victoria day weekend. But, victoria day did come early this year, so that’s understandable. It’s a bit early for us to be in this year, but that’s ok. Know how quickly the summer goes, it’s nice to sit here and think about all the days ahead of us here on the docks, and the open water. It really is a great place to sit and be a writer. Your mind frees up a bit and lets you think just about the task at hand. Ouuu, I think, I hear Jennifer getting up and going. She didn’t have a lot of sleep the night before, so she need to catch up a bit last night. I think, I need to run up to the grocery store, and pick up some bacon this morning. We’ve got eggs, but no bacon to go with them. Oh, and some spices as well. I pretty excited about the prospect of writing from up here this summer. I should get so much done. It will be cool to get the first couple of books out, and the third, if I can, before the end of July. That’s an attainable goal. Just the thought of knowing that they are out there and getting into the hands of readers, and maybe even making a ton (or a little) or (a little more) money would be so awesome. If that happened, then, it would be safe to say, this could be the best summer I’ve had in a long time. Talk about a way to boost the spirits of an old guy. Just imagine, having books making some good money, and then looking for the next boat to buy would be pretty cool. Just knowing, that your not totally dreaming, based on the book sales. That would be a pretty unbeatable feeling. Something I would truly like to experience. It’s kind of funny just sitting here, watching people walk to the washrooms from their boats on the river wall. Some chubby old guy just walked there in long polka dot pajama pants, and lime green flourscent flip flops. You definitely get some strange types up here. And this soon to be successful writer fits right in.
